Signal transduction in cells

ECTS points:
3

Program:
doktorski

Course number:
165610

Course Description

Cell to cell communication is obligatory for the survival of all organisms. It is responsible for the basic cell processes such as differentiation, proliferation, growth and death. These events engage a variety of signaling molecules that bind to cell-surface or intracellular receptors thus inducing a specific cellular responses. In depth understanding of the basic cell signaling pathways is key factor for the drug development of already existed therapeutics (e. g. Herceptin, Gleevec) as well as for the discovery of potential new drugs.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • define the major signaling molecules and signal transduction pathways in cells
  • describe the role of signaling pathways in different physiological processes
  • illustrate approaches of drug development based on acquired knowledge on cell signaling pathways
  • demonstrate critical thinking in the field of drug development based on case study analysis from appropriate references
