Duration of the study: 18 months (3 semesters, 90 ECTS)

The duration of the proposed postgraduate specialist study will be 3 (three) semesters over an 18 months period. The educational phase will last through 2 semesters, while the last semester is intended for practical work in industry and working on the finishing thesis. During the educational phase of the first two semesters there will be four weeks of intensive training offered supplemented by individual work at home.

Preconditions for enrolment

Students who have graduated from Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology, University of Zagreb, Faculty of Food Technology, University J.J. Strossmayer, Osijek, as well as students graduated from related faculties in the field of biotechnical, technical and biomedical sciences from Croatia and abroad can enrol this specialist postgraduate study.

Skills and Competences of graduates:

On completion of this specialist postgraduate study students will:

  • be able to understand, assess and control human health risks related to food-borne pathogens and contaminants
  • have knowledge of the agencies involved in the surveillance and control of foodborne diseases and be able to undertake investigations of food poisoning incidents
  • have acquired an understanding of legislative provisions with regard to food safety and hygiene in Croatia, and of comparable controls in EU and USA
  • have an insight into the social and other factors influencing nutrition related health disorders in humans
  • be able to evaluate the influence of growth, harvesting, storage and processing factors on the safety and quality of selected food groups
  • understand the assessment and control aspects of the technology used by modern food processing and packaging industry
  • have an insight of the legislative provisions regarding food labelling, composition, additives, processing, treatments and packaging.
