Basic principles of microbial ecology. Interactions in microbial communities. Cell to cell communication. Microbial biofilms and their application in biotechnological processes. The human microbial ecosystems: microbial ecology and metabolic activity of intestinal microbiota. In vitro chemostat and in vitro continuous models of the gastrointestinal tract. Manipulation of colonic metabolism with probiotics (“living probiotics” - „bugs as drugs“). Application of new paradigm in therapy of metabolic disorders: infusion of allogeneic and autologous intestinal microbiota -„faecal microbiota transplantation”. Microbial ecology of oral cavity. Ecology of dental biofilms. Probiotic interference and coaggregation with cariogenic bacterial strain Streptococcus mutans. Microbial ecology of urogenital tract and use of probiotic strains in therapy of urogenital tract infections.
