The Laboratory for Microbiology was established in 1956 as part of the Department of Technical Botany and Microscopy of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Zagreb. Since 1980, after the separation of the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology from the Faculty of Technology, University of Zagreb, it has been named the Laboratory for General Microbiology and Food Microbiology. Within the Laboratory, a Collection of Microorganisms of the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology was set up under the designation ZMPBF, which included bacteria, yeasts and molds, pathogenic microbes, as well as a starter cultures for the production of fermented food products.
Teaching in the subject General Microbiology was conducted in the academic year 1956/57 to 1957/58 by Boris Vrtar, PhD, (as an external lecturer from the Institute for Industrial Research). After that, in the academic year 1972/73, Prof. Ivan Bach, PhD, took over as a tenured lecturer, and from the year 1972/73, the subject was taught by Prof. Oton Pospišil, PhD, who also taught a new subject, Microbiology of Food, from 1979. Prof. Oton Pospišil, PhD, was the head of the Laboratory until his retirement in 1990, when Prof. Senadin Duraković, PhD, was elected head, who, together with Prof. Frane Delaš, PhD, from 2000, taught new subjects, Bacteriology, and Mycology, at the graduate course. From 2007, Prof. Frane Delaš, PhD, was the head of the Laboratory, and since 2013, it has been Prof. Ksenija Markov, PhD.
Laboratory associates participated in lectures at degrees VI and VII of the study programmes in modules General Microbiology, Microbiology of Food and Wine Technology at the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology of the University of Zagreb; module Microbiology at the Technical Faculty of the University of Bihać; General Microbiology at the Karlovac University of Applied Sciences and at the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Technology of the University of Mostar, as well as at the elective module Food Microbiology at the graduate study programme at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb.
The Laboratory associates also participated in the postgraduate study programme in 1960/61, teaching in the first postgraduate course of the Faculty of Technology of the University of Zagreb and then in the postgraduate studies Biotechnology – Bioprocess Engineering, Food Technology, Nutrition, and Analytics and Food Microbiology at FFTB and Biology at the University of Zagreb.
Furthermore, the Laboratory staff prepared and conducted the first exercises in the subject General Microbiology at the Faculty of Technology in Novi Sad (1960/61) and at the Faculty of Science in Zagreb (1961/62), and in 1964/65 they taught the subject Dairy Microbiology at the postgraduate study course at the Faculty of Agriculture in Sarajevo.
Practical education was initially performed in the shared facilities with the Laboratory for Technical Microbiology and Microscopy of the Chemistry and Technology Department of the Faculty of Technology in Zagreb, at Kršnjavog 25, and after moving to the new building of the Faculty in 1961, in a newly and specially equipped laboratory with 25 workstations.
The laboratory is now connected with the computer system of the Faculty and is equipped with new student microscopes, sterile work chamber, research microscope, lyophilizer, microtiter plate reader, electrophoresis, centrifuges and other equipment for microbiological research.
Currently, the Laboratory staff comprises 6 employees.
The honorary title of professor emeritus at the Laboratory was awarded to Prof. Senadin Duraković, PhD.
