The history of the Laboratory for General and Inorganic Chemistry and Electroanalysis can be traced back to the foundation of the Faculty of Chemistry, Food Technlogy and Mining in 1956, when the entire teaching activities for the academic subject Inorganic Chemistry with Technology at the newly established Food and Technology Department were entrusted to the Department of Inorganic Chemistry of the Chemical Technology Department. The Food and Technology Department (the Biotechnology Department since 1960) selected its teaching staff, which operated within the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of the Chemical Technology Department. Consequently, the teaching of inorganic chemistry, which was first performed by Prof. Ivan Filipović, and later by Prof. Ivan Filipović and Prof. Ivan Piljac, was joint for both departments. After the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology became independent from the Faculty of Technology in 1979, the Laboratory for General and Inorganic Chemistry and Electroanalysis started functioning as an independent organizational unit within the FFTB’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
