The Croatian Association of Food Technologists, Biotechnologists and Nutritionists
The Croatian Association of Food Technologists, Biotechnologists and Nutritionists is an association with the goal of linking Bachelors and Masters of Food Technology, Biotechnology and Nutrition Science at the University of Zagreb in order to develop and promote the profession, preserve the dignity of the profession and advocate interests of the profession. The Association’s Programme is primarily focused on the research of employment possibilities; their influence on legal regulations; linking to related associations and non-government organisations internationally; popularising of profession through media and publishing of a journal.
The Society was founded in 1990. to gather biotechnologists and experts in related fields for improvement of all branches of biotechnology, providing technical and scientific assistance for improving the teaching of biotechnology in universities and business organizations for the application of biotechnology in the economy , organization of scientific meetings and conferences, holding public meetings, seminars and lectures, to inform the general public about the work of the Society, scientific publications or to provide technical assistance, expertise and analysis, dealing with publishing in accordance with the Law on scientific and research activity. Society members are scientists or experts in the field of biotechnology from Croatia and abroad, who have equal rights and obligations. Croatian Society of Biotechnology is also a member of scientific societies from abroad such as European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB), European Biotechnology Thematic Network Association (EBTNA) and European Section on Biochemical Engineering Science (ESBES).
The Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology accommodates the headquarters of two scientific & expert societies, the Croatian Biotechnology Society (CBS, in Croatian: HDB) and the Croatian Society of Food Technologists, Biotechnologists and Nutrition Scientists (CSFTBNS, in Croatian: HDPBN). The presidents of both societies are FFTB faculty members; the same goes for numerous members of both Societies, many of these members thereby being entrusted with managerial and executive duties. Given the CBS membership in the European Society of Biotechnology and the CSFTBNS membership in the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST), as well as in the European Union of Food Science and Technology (EFFoST) and the American Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), these Societies also pose as links to kindred societies established not only in Europe but worldwide.
On top of that, a number of FFTB faculty members is, or was, entrusted with managerial duties in other scientific and scientific & expert societies, such as the Croatian Microbiology Society, the Croatian Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Society, the Croatian Chemistry Society, the Croatian Society of Chemical Engineers and Chemical Technologists, etc. Each and every society referred to above is a member of the corresponding European and global society/association, through which a wide-scale international collaboration has been established, actively brought to life by our faculty members as well.
The Biotechnical Foundation was established with the objective of promoting biotechnology, food technology, nutrition science and environmental protection. The basic purpose of the Foundation is its exclusive purpose for beneficiaries of its financial resources are the students and young researchers, who are awarded annual scholarships, prizes or allowances. Only the best full-time students can be awarded scholarships. Allowances or prizes are offered only to students of postgraduate studies who have, through their work and intellectual capacities, achieved the results applicable in the Republic of Croatia.
