Description:
Objectives of the Course
To provide the student with the basic knowledge of organic chemistry necessary for mastery of the subject matter in biochemistry and professional courses. To train the student in the application of laboratory techniques and methods on which the purification, isolation ans synthesis of (bio)organic compounds are based.
Description of Course Content
Theoretical part: Types, properties and nomenclature of organic compounds. Organic chemical reactions. Resonance. Stereochemistry. Alkenes and alkynes, electrophilic addition on unsaturated carbon. Benzene and heterocyclic aromatic compounds, electrophilic aromatic substitution. Alkyl halides, nucleophilic substitution, elimination. Carboxylic acids and derivatives, nucleophilic substitution on the carbonyl group. Aldehydes and ketones, nucleophilic addition to the carbonyl group. Carbohydrates. Carbanions, condensation reactions. Natural compounds. Basic theoretical principles of IR and NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.
Experimental part: Purification of organic molecules and isolation of volatile substances from natural materials. Synthesis of (aromatic) organic compounds). Isolation of (bio)organic compounds from natural materials. Recording and interpretation of IR spectra of (bio)organic compounds isolated from natural materials.
Learning outcomes:
  1. Recognize and name selected organic compounds (from simple hydrocarbons to compounds with functional groups).
  2. Interpret the influence of structure on the physicochemical properties and reactivity of selected organic molecules.
  3. Describe and explain basic stereochemical terms using simple organic compounds.
  4. Predict and interpret the mechanisms of addition, substitution and elimination reactions using selected organic compounds.
  5. Classify selected biomolecules (carbohydrates, nucleic acids and lipids) and describe their chemical properties and reactivity.
  6. Explain the basic theoretical principles of IR and NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Apply the methods mentioned to determine the structure of organic compounds compounds.
  7. Perform simple purification, isolation and synthesis procedures according to given instructions using standard laboratory methods and techniques.
