Description:
Theoretical: Types, properties and nomenclature of organic compounds. Organic chemical reactions. Resonance. Stereochemistry. Alkene and alkyne: electrophilic addition reactions on unsaturated carbon. Benzene and heterocyclic aromatic compounds: electrophilic aromatic substitution. Alkyl halides: nucleophilic substitution, elimination reaction. Carboxylic acids and derivatives: nucheophilic substitution reactions on carbonyl group. Aldehydes and ketones: nucleophilic addition reactions on carbonyl group. Carbohydrates. Carbanion: condensation reaction. Natural compounds. Basic theoretical principles of IR and NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Experimentally: Purification of organic molecules and isolation of volatile substances from natural materials. Synthesis of (aromatic) organic compounds. Isolation of (bio)organic compounds from natural materials. Recording and interpretation of IR spectra of (bio)organic compounds isolated from natural materials.
Learning outcomes:
  1. Recognize and name selected organic compounds (from simple hydrocarbons to compounds containing functional groups)
  2. Interpret the influence of structure on the physico-chemical properties and reactivity of selected organic molecules
  3. Describe and explain basic stereochemical concepts in simple examples of organic compounds
  4. Predicted and interpret the mechanisms of addition, substitution and elimination reactions on selected examples of organic compounds
  5. Classify selected biomolecules (carbohydrates, nucleic acids and lipids) and describe their chemical properties and reactivity
  6. Explain the basic theoretical principles of IR and NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Apply the methods mentioned to determine the structure of organic compounds
  7. According to the given instruction, independently perform the simple purification and isolation procedures and the synthesis of organic compounds using conventional laboratory techniques
