Description:
The course aims to acquire the fundamental knowledge of organic chemistry necessary to pursue and learn biochemistry and related subjects and to master practical laboratory techniques used in synthesizing, isolating, and purifying organic compounds. The characteristics of organic compounds (electronic structure, bonding, and stereochemistry) and their nomenclature are introduced. The fundamentals of reaction mechanisms (ionic and radical) are explained, and resonance is discussed as an important concept for understanding the reactivity and stability of conjugated systems. This is followed by chapters on individual types of organic compounds and their reactivity (alkenes/alkynes - AdE, aromatics - SE, alkyl halides - SN and E, aldehydes and ketones - AdN, carboxylic acids and derivatives - SNAc). Particular attention is paid to reactions in biological systems. Organic chemistry concludes with an overview of biomolecules (carbohydrates, lipids, peptides and vitamins) and heterocycles. Teaching takes place in the form of lectures, laboratory exercises and seminars.
