Description:
The aim of this course is to make students understand the role of vitamins and hormones, and concepts of their production processes. Students will learn definition, classification, nomenclature, chemical composition and role of vitamins and hormones. The main emphasize will be given to the water- and oil- soluble vitamins and technology of their production. Lectures cover importance of steroid and protein hormones productions approached from biotech standpoint, based on defining parameters for upstream and downstream microbial processes. During lab courses, students will perform synthesis of vitamins and isolation of hormones from natural sources. Analytical methods for quantitative assays will be also discussed.
On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to:
Define the role of vitamins and hormones in organism
Compare chemical and biotechnological methods of commercial vitamin production
Describe and compare production of steroid and protein hormones
Critically discuss rDNa technology in vitamins and hormones production
Calculate mass balance and yield during synthesis, isolation and quantification of vitamins and hormones
