At the Department of Process Engineering, Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology, University of Zagreb, upon completion of undergraduate and graduate study programmes, students are awarded academic titles of Bachelor or Master. Students acquire knowledge from various fields of process engineering, mathematical modelling, management and optimization and control of technological processes, thermodynamics, measurements, regulation and automation, transition phenomena, unit operations, but also determining material and energy balances in biotechnology and food engineering. Postgraduate studies are also included in the curriculum of the Department for Process Engineering for the doctoral academic degree. Development of new methods of management, control and safety of technological processes in the food industry, characterization of the mixing degree for powdered materials, determination of particle size distribution, analysis of textural properties of food products, application of ultrasound and high hydrostatic pressure in food technology and biotechnology are an integral part of the work done by the Department’s staff. The Department conducts research activities in numerous scientific and technological projects.

The staff of the Department are active members of international organizations (ISEKI - Integrating Food Science and Engineering Knowledge Into the Food Chain; EAFE - European Academy of Food Engineering and international projects (FP6, UNIDO, COST, TEMPUS, ERASMUS, EU Structural Funds and Bilateral projects) with the aim of connecting with research teams in the European research area.

In this way, they develop and improve the technological processes of food processing and production. Over the last few years, the laboratories of the Department for Process Engineering have collaborated with numerous food companies through technology projects.
