Laboratory for Nutrition Science

The Laboratory for Food Chemistry and Nutrition was founded in 1956 as part of the Department for Knowledge and Analytics of Foodstuffs, and in 1964, it became an independent Section of Food Chemistry and Nutrition at the Biotechnology Department of the Faculty of Technology. Until 1962, it was located in the area of the Department for Knowledge and Analytics of Foodstuffs at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry. After moving into today’s building, the Laboratory shared its space with the Laboratory for Food Analysis and continued its research and teaching activities on its subjects (“Knowledge of foodstuffs” and “Food microscopy”, and in 1963 in the subject “Chemistry of food and nutrition”), in which Prof. Nada Jurković, PhD, was included as an assistant. After the reorganization and the independent establishment of The Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology in 1972, two subjects were introduced: “Chemistry of foodstuffs” and “The fundamentals of nutrition science”. At that time, the Laboratory for Food Chemistry and Nutrition was founded, and in 1984, Prof. Nada Jurković, PhD, set up a new course in the Food Engineering studies, and new subjects were introduced: “Chemistry of food”, “The fundamentals of nutrition science I”, “The fundamentals of nutrition science II” and “The fundamentals of human physiology”. By introducing the new curricula in 1996, “Diet therapy”, “Nutrition of athletes and military” and “Obesity and malnutrition” were formed. With the introduction of the new educational system in higher education in 2005, undergraduate and graduate study programmes called Nutrition were established, and in 2007, doctoral programme of Nutrition as well. In place of the Laboratory for Food Chemistry and Nutrition, in 2009, two laboratories were established: Laboratory for Nutrition Science and the Laboratory for Food Chemistry and Biochemistry.
